A Memorial That Branches Out

The Avis M. Lloyd Tree of Life, located within the John A. DeQuattro Community Cancer Center, offers a unique and wonderful way to recognize loved ones.

The Tree of Life, which was unveiled in June, is a beautifully sculptured wall mounting with dozens of leaves in brass, silver and copper. Donors may memorialize or honor family members, friends, and organizations through the purchase of one of the 200 engravable leaves.

The initial set-up of the giving tree was paid for in part through the Avis M. Lloyd Fund, a fund established by Mrs. Lloyd's children, other family members, and friends. Not only is the purpose of the tree to honor the memory of loved ones, but it is also meant to celebrate the current lives of family and friends by honoring birthdays, anniversaries, marriages, retirements, or other special occasions.

A major portion of the donations raised through the sale of leaves will be used to establish a fund to assist cancer patients who are unable to afford anti-nausea medication needed to alleviate the affects of chemotherapy.

Mary Wilson, Avis Lloyd's daughter, said, "The family thought the tree was the best way to memorialize a person who spent her whole life giving."

Donors wishing to purchase a leaf may select from either a $100 brass, $200 silver, or $300 copper leaf that is personalized with their message.

The Tree is on permanent public display within The John A. DeQuattro Community Cancer Center for patients and visitors to view while visiting the Center. For more information, contact Laura Hosmer, development associate, at (860) 647-4767.

Keynote Speaker: Wendy S. Harpham, M.D.
Internist, Award-winning Author, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Survivor

Wendy S. Harpham, M.D., an internist at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, promised her patients that she'd care for them until she retired on her 80th birthday. That dream was shattered in 1990 when she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. She was only 36 years old, and she has been in and out of treatment ever since. Using her unique perspective as a physician turned patient, Dr. Harpham will share her hard-won insights, practical philosophy, and science-based knowledge for getting good care and living a full life after a cancer diagnosis. All attendees will receive a free copy of Dr. Harpham's book, "Happiness in a Storm: Facing Illness and Embracing Life as a Healthy Survivor." There will be a book-signing and refreshments.

Come celebrate the lives of cancer survivors and the families, friends, researchers, and healthcare providers who have supported the fight every step of the way.

Tom Hayes is a master salesman and life motivator. With an iron will, forged out of the tragic experience of losing a leg to cancer in childhood, Hayes has a compelling history to share with his audiences. A world traveler, extreme sports enthusiast, and proud father of two happy and successful daughters, Hayes epitomizes a "can-do" approach to life's challenges.

Even though he lost a leg to cancer at age 12, it is not uncommon to see him skiing by you on a black diamond slope in the Rockies; racing sailing yachts off the coast of Nantucket; or, if you are up to the challenge, bungee jumping from a 340-foot cliff in New Zealand. From biking in Argentina, to fly-fishing the Bahamian flats, to scuba-diving in Costa Rica, there isn't a challenge Tom hasn't enthusiastically faced head-on… especially if someone said that it couldn't be done. Tom is a believer in the axiom, "If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space."

For the past 20 years, Tom has maintained a second career as a first-rate stand-up comedian, humorist, and speaker. In 1986, Tom received the "Funniest Person" award from the Showtime Cable Network. Hayes combines his offbeat sense of humor with the practical advice of how the game of life is really won day after day.
